After the NBA season was suspended on March 11th, 2020 due to the spread of COVID-19, the world was without the NBA for the next 4 months. The Lakers had dominated the Western Conference throughout the season, holding the number one seed headed into the suspension. When the season resumed in July, the Lakers picked up right where they left off, clinching a playoff spot as a one seed and cruising through the playoffs, losing just three games before the NBA Finals.
Their opponent, the Miami Heat had a very different path. Entering the playoffs as a 5 seed, the Heat got off to a hot start, sweeping the Indiana Pacers. While their sweeping of the Pacers was expected, they shocked the basketball world in the Semifinals, beating the one seeded Milwaukee Bucks in 5 games. They took their momentum into the Eastern Conference Finals and upset the Boston Celtics.
Unfortunately, Miami’s Cinderella run would come to an end as they would go on to lose to the superior Lakers in 6 games.
LeBron James won Finals MVP, averaging 29.8 points, 11.8 rebounds and 8.5 assists.
